How BPL Works
The following two graphics give an overview of how the technology works. These have been gracioulsy provided to us by our partners, PowerGrid Communications, in the Ghanaian BPL project. (www.powergridcomm.com)
The broadband signal is injected at the substation and is carried through the grid by various medium voltage boxes, noise reducers, and repeaters.
Data transfer of the medium voltage lines can support speeds of up to 200 mbps and the low voltage lines run approximately at 25 mbps.
Once a house, building, or school has been connected to BPL, they are able to take advantage of all the add-on services that are highlighted on the introductory page of this section.
Some notable technologies are automatic meter reading, provision for smart home applications, and high speed Internet access.
